People also ask

These questions come up most often when choosing a Poly headset.
Every answer is based on Poly's official spec sheets and user guides.

Can it stay connected to my phone and my computer at the same time?

Yes, two at a time. Every Voyager headset on this page keeps two active connections, so a call on either device rings in your ear. On models that come with the BT700 USB adapter, the adapter counts as one of the two, so the typical setup is your computer through the adapter plus one phone.

If you want two phones and no computer, the Voyager Legend handles that well: it pairs with both and answers calls from either one.

Do I need the USB dongle, or can I use my laptop's built-in Bluetooth?

Sound works without it. Control doesn't, at least not fully. HP says call control in supported apps (answer, end and mute) and remote firmware updates only work through the BT700 adapter, not through your laptop's own Bluetooth. Without the dongle, the mute button on the headset may not mute you in Teams.

Every Voyager on this page except the Legend ships with a BT700 in the box, and Poly recommends keeping it plugged in: the adapter gives the best connection and sound quality. With it, HP rates the Focus 2 and 4320 at up to 164 ft (50 m) of range.

Voyager Legend or Voyager 5200: which one should I get?

On paper the 5200 is the stronger headset: four microphones instead of three, wind protection, Bluetooth 5.0 and up to 98 ft (30 m) of range against the Legend's 33 ft (10 m). Talk time is the same, up to 7 hours.

The Legend still has two advantages. It charges through a magnetic snap-on connector, while the 5200 uses a standard micro-USB port. And its earpiece shape suits some ears better. The 5200 bundle on this page comes with a charging case, so the headset recharges every time you put it away.

It says 7 hours of talk time. How long does the battery really last?

Expect a bit less in daily use. Poly rates both the Voyager 5200 and the Legend at up to 7 hours, which is a best-case figure. Poly's user guide names two reasons real talk time comes in lower: HD Voice (wideband audio) uses more power, and some phones have less efficient Bluetooth connections. Like any lithium-ion battery, it also loses capacity with age.

Both batteries are sealed, so you can't swap one out. If you're on calls most of the day, get the 5200 with the charging case. A full case recharges the headset twice, which adds up to 14 hours of talk time.

Can I wear the Voyager Focus 2 all day without sore ears?

That depends on how your ears handle on-ear cushions. The Focus 2 is an on-ear headset that weighs 0.39 lb (177 g), so the cushions rest on your ears rather than around them. If it feels tight, Poly's user guide recommends gently flexing the headband wider.

If on-ear headsets have always bothered you, look at the Voyager Surround 80 instead. Its cushions go around the ear, and it weighs 0.6 lb.

Does the Voyager 4320 cancel noise for me too, or only on the microphone?

Only on the microphone. The 4320 uses two mics with Acoustic Fence to cut background noise for the people on the other end. For your own ears it has no active noise cancelling, just the passive seal of the cushions.

If you want quiet on your side as well, that's the Voyager Focus 2: hybrid ANC with low and high settings, plus four microphones instead of two. Like most ANC, it works best on steady sounds such as fans and air conditioning, while nearby voices are reduced less. For a quiet home office, the 4320 is enough.

Would a DECT headset give me a more stable connection than a Bluetooth one?

In an office, usually yes. DECT headsets sold in the US run on their own 1.9 GHz band, so they don't compete with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth traffic on 2.4 GHz. Range is longer too. HP rates the CS540 at up to 400 ft (120 m) in open space. Walls and desks cut that down, and Poly's figure for the Savi 8220 in a typical office is about 180 ft (55 m).

The trade-off is the base. A DECT headset only talks to its own base station, so it suits one fixed desk. If you switch desks or carry a laptop between home and the office, a Bluetooth model with a USB adapter is more practical.

Do I really need the HL10 lifter? Doesn't the CS540 have its own answer button?

It has one, but on its own that button only opens the radio link to the base. Your desk phone still needs you to lift the handset or press its headset key before the call connects. The HL10 lifter does the lifting for you, so you can answer from across the office. Some desk phones can do the same thing electronically through an EHS cable, with nothing moving on the desk.

Look up your phone model in HP's compatibility guide before you order. If it lists the HL10 for your phone, the CS540 with HL10 bundle covers it in one box.

Can I connect the CS540 to my computer or my cell phone?

No. The CS540 base has a power jack, a lifter port and a phone cable, with no USB and no Bluetooth. It works with a desk phone only.

For one headset that covers all three, look at the Plantronics Savi 8220 Office. Its base connects to your computer by USB and to the desk phone by cable, and pairs with your cell over Bluetooth. Buttons on the base switch between them. To answer desk phone calls away from your desk, it still needs an HL10 lifter or an EHS cable.

Will the Blackwire mic keep background noise out of my calls?

Yes, as long as the boom sits close to your mouth. The Blackwire 3210, 3220 and 5220 all have a noise-cancelling microphone with digital signal processing that keeps room noise out of your calls. Like any noise-cancelling boom mic, it is tuned for short distances: the closer it sits to the corner of your mouth, the better it separates your voice from the room. If people still hear background noise, move the boom closer.

For your own ears these are not ANC headsets. The cushions block some noise passively, and that's all.
